My intention for this blog

In this blog, I would like to share some of my experiences which I have gained over the past three years since I have moved to the Netherlands to continue my studies.

My mother always told me that she wanted me to step into the big world, because she believed that I could develop myself way better and accomplish a lot more if I would be studying abroad. I never completely understood why she had always told me that, until I moved to the Netherlands.

 In June 2015, I graduated from the AlphaMax Academy, an English private school, at the age of eighteen years. I had finished High School and I was finally ready for tertiary education. Months before we, senior students, were graduating, we all needed to enroll at the universities abroad for the studies we wanted to do. At that time I applied at more than five universities for the program International Business and Management Studies.

The challenges I have faced during my second year studying in the Netherlands

My Second year studying in the Netherlands  In June 2016, I successfully completed the course foundation year for International students (VASVU). In September 2016, I was finally allowed to start with my bachelor's Economics and Business Economics. I was happy and enthusiastic! Expanding my network and making new friends was quite easy because there were many Surinamese students like me who had moved to the Netherlands for their follow-up study, and of course, I also opened up myself to get to know other International students.  Step by step I got used to the student life in the Netherlands. Life in the Netherlands is very different compared to life in Suriname. Here everything is arranged and about being on time. In the Netherlands, you are bound by strict rules and laws. On the other hand, it took me a long time to get used to the weather.  In Suriname, I was always a spoiled child. I was brought everywhere by my parents and everything was arranged for me...

My Third Year - Reflections

In September 2017, I continued studying. This time it was much easier because I was already used to the life of a university student. Besides my study, I also participated in a Surinamese student association, Surinamese Students Abroad (SSA) , where I gained a lot of great experience and skills such as time management, working in teams, organizing events, activities, gaining social and communication skills. During this great year in the organization, I also expanded my network. When I was much younger I always dreamt of studying abroad and living in the Netherlands or the United States of America. The reason why I chose the Netherlands was that it would be much easier in the beginning to adapt. This, due to a lot of my family members already living in the Netherlands. I really dreamt of living in Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands. I turned my dream into reality. In January 2017, I moved on my own to campus Uilenstede in Amstelveen, near Amsterdam.
